Stainless sheet metal gauge is a system used to identify the nominal thickness of stainless steel sheet. In commonly referenced U.S. gauge conventions, a lower gauge number represents thicker stainless sheet, while a higher gauge number represents thinner material. For example, 16-gauge stainless steel is approximately 0.0598 inches, or 1.52 mm, thick. However, gauge numbers…
7GA steel thickness is approximately 0.1793 inches, or 4.55 mm, under the U.S. Manufacturers’ Standard Gauge for standard sheet steel. However, gauge measurements depend on the metal involved. Therefore, you should not automatically use a standard-steel gauge measurement for stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, or wire. This distinction matters when ordering materials for fabrication, construction,…
The thinnest sheet metal depends on the metal, manufacturing process, and industry definition. Manufacturers can roll metals into extremely thin material, although very thin products are usually classified as metal foil rather than sheet metal. For everyday fabrication, stainless steel sheet is available in many gauges, with higher gauge numbers generally representing thinner material within…
